Bathroom remodels are one of the most common household remodeling projects (second only to kitchen renovations), in part because updating a bathroom increases the home’s value to the point where sellers can recoup the bulk of the investment. But that up-front investment can take your breath away, especially if you’re considering multiple high-end luxury fixtures, counters, and tiles.
So how can you get the luxurious bathroom remodel you crave without busting your budget?
Make Wise Plans
If you’re knocking down a wall to make a home spa, routing new plumbing and electricity will be necessary. But if you’re working within the same space, consider installing new fixtures in the same place as the old. Rearranging the plumbing and electricity in order to accommodate a completely new configuration can add significantly to the cost of the remodeling project. Choosing to keep the layout, however, allows you to spend more of your hard-earned money for aesthetic upgrades.
Choose Your Focus
What is the upgrade you’re most looking forward to? A luxurious tub? An eco-smart toilet? Or stunning new tiles? Choose your bathroom focus and that’ll direct where you spend the most money. If you decide to invest in a shower spa, then buy a standard toilet, tub, and consider less expensive tiling.
The cost of tile and labor can eat up a significant portion of your budget. You can dial back on the cost in multiple ways:
- Limit tiling to the floor, shower, and tub area.
- Install wainscoting to chair-rail height and paint above that area.
- Use less expensive tiles but invest in accent tiles, borders, edges, and trim treatments
Countertops or Not
Because bathroom counter tops are usually small in square footage, you can splurge on granite or even marble if it pleases your aesthetic. Alternatively, you could ditch this cost altogether and opt for a pedestal sink (or sinks, if your bathroom is made for two.) This would also save on built-in cabinetry if you opt for a free-standing piece in which to store towels, toiletries, and toilet paper.
Re-Use And Recycle
If you love antique fixtures, multiple organizations take advantage of building demolitions to rescue vintage flooring, lighting fixtures, faucets, vanities, etc. for resale at bargain-basement prices. To save on the cost of new items, check out salvage material outlets in your area as well as Habitat for Humanity resale outlets.
While you may be able to do some of the remodeling project yourself, such as the demolition work, it’s wise to hire a contractor for construction and installation to be sure that all permits have been obtained and that the work is done efficiently and right.
